Thinking very highly of self ? Let Nick prick your ego balloon !!

Nick is 26 years old, was born in Australia,  went to a normal school and has completed double major degree in Finance & Accountancy. He has travelled all the six continents as an inspirational speaker, etc. What else? Oh yes, I forgot to tell that he also swims, plays golf, types at a speed of 42 words per minute ( faster than you and me ). And makes some money from stock market trading and real estate business. Charity? Certainly yeas. He runs a foundation also.
If you are questioning me why I am taking your time by dishing out  these stereotype 'qualifications' similar to hundreds of persons into whom you bump into now and then, please hold your breath! Nick is not like you and me! He is different. He is Nick Vujicic!  Ryan English has written beautifully about him and I invite you to http://www.salvationarmy.org.au/warcry/default.asp?contentID=1413.  Ryan writes:”
When Nick Vujicic was born, his mother didn’t want to hold him. In fact, she asked the doctors to take him away. ...‘My Dad did not think I would survive for very long,’ says Nick.  ‘But tests proved that I was a healthy baby boy with just one hitch: I’d been born without any limbs.’

Missing both arms at shoulder level, and having one small foot with two toes protruding from his left thigh, Nick was a complete surprise to his parents. Medicine has been unable to explain his condition and his mother was very careful during pregnancy, even avoiding pain-killers like Panadol. His parents, dedicated Christians, couldn’t help but ask themselves: ‘If God is a God of love, then why would he let something like this happen, and especially to devoted Christians?’ Understandably, they worried about the kind of life Nick would be able to lead.
It took them months to come to terms with the situation facing their firstborn. But they overcame their fears and worked hard to give him the best life they could, including attending school.  ‘I was the first disabled student to be integrated into a mainstream Australian school,’ says Nick. Like many things in his life, getting into the school he wanted was a fight. At the time, Australian law didn’t allow physically disabled children into mainstream schools, even if they weren’t mentally impaired. However, Nick’s mum fought to change the law, and won.
‘I liked going to school,’ says Nick. ‘I always tried to get myself involved as much as possible, and wanted to do what everyone else was doing.’ ...‘[But] it was very hard at times,’ he says, ‘because kids are kids.’

Nick was singled out and bullied by the other students for his physical differences.  ‘It was very hard to deal with that rejection at times—kids staring at me, laughing at me, making up names and all those sorts of things. ‘I went home crying a lot of times and asking “Why? Why did God do it?” and Mum and Dad told me, “Only God knows”.’
Blaming God for his disability, Nick didn’t want anything to do with him—a difficult thing in a Christian home. ‘I didn’t want to speak to him, I didn’t want to hear about him,’ he says. ........

At eight, Nick began to contemplate suicide. ‘I looked at my life and I thought, not going to get married, not going to have kids, not going to have family, not going to have a job, not going to be independent—all those things in life that everybody else takes for granted. I didn’t think that kind of life was worth living.
‘When I was 10 I actually tried to suicide by turning over in my family bathtub three times. What stopped me going through with it was the thought of leaving my parents with a lifetime of guilt on their shoulders, wishing they could have done something more for their son.’
Eventually, Nick found his way forward. Taking his parents’ advice, he began starting conversations with the people around him and anyone who treated him differently.
‘Soon the students realized I was just like them,’ he says.  Starting there, Nick never had any trouble making new friends. Than, at 13, Nick read a newspaper article that would change his life.
‘[It was] about a man who was disabled,’ he says. ‘I realized that I wasn’t the only person in the world in a situation that couldn’t be changed and didn’t make sense. ‘I realized I had a choice. Either I could be angry with God for what I didn’t have, or be thankful to God for what I did have.

Nick held out hope for a miracle, but eventually came to realize something: ‘If God doesn’t change your circumstance, then he’s going to use it.’
That realization gave Nick a new direction in life that many people wouldn’t have considered; to, as he puts it, ‘encourage and inspire others to live to their fullest potential and not let anything get in the way of accomplishing their hopes and dreams.’
So, from the age of 19, Nick began talking to people about his experiences—and now, at 26, he has built a life for himself that can only be called extraordinary.
‘I’ve learned to become independent and can now take care of all my personal needs.

‘I’m able to do everything from brushing my teeth and combing my hair to dressing up and taking care of my personal hygiene, including shaving.

‘I get around the house by jumping around and, outside the house, an electric wheelchair assists me.’
Nick has made a name for himself simply by overcoming challenges he sets for himself. He swims, drives a boat, enjoys fishing (with an electronic reel), plays soccer and, most recently, and has taken up surfing.  ‘They put me on the front cover of Surfer Magazine,’ Nick says. ‘It was fantastic. I was able to jump and spin myself 360 degrees around on the board—no surfer has ever done that before.’
......His real passion is motivational speaking, sharing his faith in God and his incredible story with anyone who wants—or needs—to hear it. Now living in Los Angeles, Nick’s story has put him in high demand. ‘I’ve spoken 1,500 times,’ he says. ‘Last year alone I travelled to 14 different countries and got to talk to more than 600 million people.’
He was awarded The Most Inspirational Life Award at the Christian Music Awards in California and now he is writing his first book, entitled No Arms, No Legs, No Worries!
The book is due for release in September next year, when Nick appears on Oprah—a long-time dream of his.
He’s achieved a lot, and is looking set to achieve even more, but does he still hold out hope for a miraculous healing? ( He says)
my motto ...... has been: if God doesn’t give you a miracle, then you are a miracle to someone else… I am a miracle just the way I am.’
- Ryan English

Nick has a very great sense of humour: He says that not having arms or legs means no need for expensive shoes, wrist watch, ring, etc! When asked how he visions himself 20 years from now, he said - being married, and walking his daughter down the aisle.

Coming back to the title of this post, I asked myself: how many years am I older than Nick? With all limbs in tact, how much have I travelled beyond Nick's journey of life? Where would I have been, if I were to be born like? How many people are there around us who have all limbs but no heart?
After reading Nick’s journey, I have found   the answers. And the answers lie in attitude, confidence, will power, determination, faith & action and not words, not in excuses, not in blame game, not in overconfidence.

As the Nike  advertisement tells us – “Just Do it”; because life is short and tasks are endless.

Nick has shown us that it is in our hands to turn the 'life without limbs' into 'life without limit' .

Thank you and best wishes, dear Nick !!

Amusing Correspondence : Hotel Maid and the Guest

Have you been lucky to receive one e-mail forward which narrates humorous correspondence, exchanged between a London hotel and one of its guests and which was reportedly submitted to the Sunday Times for publication by this London news paper?

Good news that it is indeed funny.

Bad news is that the correspondence is not real but imaginary. ( To be precise, it is written by comedian Shelley Berman who published it in one of his books, A Hotel Is a Place in 1972.)

Enjoy !!

The Saga of Hotel Soap

The following letters were taken from an actual incident between a London hotel and one of its guests. The Hotel submitted the letters to the London Sunday Times for their humor column:
-----------------------
Dear Maid,

Please do not leave any more of those little bars of soap in my bathroom since I have brought my own bath-sized Dial. Please remove the six unopened little bars from the shelf under the medicine chest and another three in the shower soap dish. They are in my way.

Thank you,
S. Berman
------------------
Dear Room 635,

I am not your regular maid. She will be back tomorrow, Thursday, from her day off. I took the 3 hotel soaps out of the shower soap dish as you requested. The 6 bars on your shelf I took out of your way and put on top of your Kleenex dispenser in case you should change your mind. This leaves only the 3 bars I left today which my instructions from the management are to leave 3 soaps daily. I hope this is satisfactory.

Kathy, Relief Maid
---------------------
Dear Maid - I hope you are my regular maid.

Apparently Kathy did not tell you about my note to her concerning the little bars of soap. When I got back to my room this evening I found you had added 3 little Camays to the shelf under my medicine cabinet. I am going to be here in the hotel for two weeks and have brought my own bath-size Dial so I won't need those 6 little Camays which are on the shelf. They are in my way when shaving, brushing teeth, etc. Please remove them.

S. Berman
-------------------
Dear Mr. Berman,

My day off was last Wed. so the relief maid left 3 hotel soaps which we are instructed by the management. I took the 6 soaps which were in your way on the shelf and put them in the soap dish where your Dial was. I put the Dial in the medicine cabinet for your convenience. I didn't remove the 3 complimentary soaps which are always placed inside the medicine cabinet for all new check-ins and which you did not object to when you checked in last Monday. Please let me know if I can of further assistance.

Your regular maid,
Dotty

---------------------
Dear Mr. Berman,

The assistant manager, Mr. Kensedder, informed me this morning that you called him last evening and said you were unhappy with your maid service. I have assigned a new girl to your room. I hope you will accept my apologies for any past inconvenience. If you have any future complaints please contact me so I can give it my personal attention. Call extension 1108 between 8AM and 5PM.Thank you.

Elaine Carmen
Housekeeper
----------------------
Dear Miss Carmen,

It is impossible to contact you by phone since I leave the hotel for business at 7:45 AM and don't get back before 5:30 or 6PM. That's the reason I called Mr. Kensedder last night. You were already off duty. I only asked Mr. Kensedder if he could do anything about those little bars of soap. The new maid you assigned me must have thought I was a new check-in today, since she left another 3 bars of hotel soap in my medicine cabinet along with her regular delivery of 3 bars on the bath-room shelf. In just 5 days here I have accumulated 24 little bars of soap. Why are you doing this to me?

S. Berman
-----------------------
Dear Mr. Berman,

Your maid, Kathy, has been instructed to stop delivering soap to your room and remove the extra soaps. If I can be of further assistance, please call extension 1108 between 8AM and 5PM.Thank you,

Elaine Carmen,
Housekeeper
-----------------------
Dear Mr. Kensedder,

My bath-size Dial is missing. Every bar of soap was taken from my room including my own bath-size Dial. I came in late last night and had to call the bellhop to bring me 4 little Cashmere Bouquets.

S. Berman
-------------------
Dear Mr. Berman,

I have informed our housekeeper, Elaine Carmen, of your soap problem. I cannot understand why there was no soap in your room since our maids are instructed to leave 3 bars of soap each time they service a room. The situation will be rectified immediately. Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience.

Martin L. Kensedder
Assistant Manager
-------------------------
Dear Mrs. Carmen,

Who the hell left 54 little bars of Camay in my room? I came in last night and found 54 little bars of soap. I don't want 54 little bars of Camay. I want my one damn bar of bath-size Dial. Do you realize I have 54 bars of soap in here. All I want is my bath size Dial. Please give me back my bath-size Dial.

S. Berman
-------------------
Dear Mr. Berman,

You complained of too much soap in your room so I had them removed. Then you complained to Mr. Kensedder that all your soap was missing so I personally returned them. The 24 Camays which had been taken and the 3 Camays you are supposed to receive daily. I don't know anything about the 4 Cashmere Bouquets. Obviously your maid, Kathy, did not know I had returned your soaps so she also brought 24 Camays plus the 3 daily Camays. I don't know where you got the idea this hotel issues bath-size Dial. I was able to locate some bath-size Ivory which I left in your room.

Elaine Carmen
Housekeeper
-------------------
Dear Mrs. Carmen,

Just a short note to bring you up-to-date on my latest soap inventory. As of today I possess:

- On the shelf under medicine cabinet - 18 Camay in 4 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.
- On the Kleenex dispenser - 11 Camay in 2 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 3.
- On the bedroom dresser - 1 stack of 3 Cashmere Bouquet,
- 1 stack of 4 hotel-size Ivory, and 8 Camay in 2 stacks of 4.
- Inside the medicine cabinet - 14 Camay in 3 stacks of 4 and 1 stack of 2.
- In the shower soap dish - 6 Camay, very moist.
- On the northeast corner of tub - 1 Cashmere Bouquet, slightly used.
- On the northwest corner of tub - 6 Camays in 2 stacks of 3.

Please ask Kathy when she services my room to make sure the stacks are neatly piled and dusted. Also, please advise her that stacks of more than 4 have a tendency to tip. May I suggest that my bedroom window sill is not in use and will make an excellent spot for future soap deliveries. One more item, I have purchased another bar of bath-sized Dial which I am keeping in the hotel vault in order to avoid further misunderstandings.

Assertiveness, one barking feamle dog & an untimely funeral

One often finds that others dominate him into thinking their way  or that  it is  difficult for him to express positive or negative feelings frankly.

It is likely that he has a common problem known as "lack of assertiveness."

What is Assertiveness?

Assertiveness is standing up for your right to be treated fairly. It is expressing your opinions, needs, and feelings, without ignoring or hurting the opinions, needs, and feelings of others.
Because people want to be liked and thought of as 'nice' or 'easy to get along with', they often keep their opinions to themselves, especially if those opinions conflict with other people's.

A university counseling centre abroad has given in nutshell some tips. Read on .....

“… Before you can comfortably express your needs, you must believe you have a legitimate right to have those needs.

Keep in mind that you have the following rights:

·         The right to decide how to lead your life. This includes pursuing your own goals and dreams and establishing your own priorities.
·         The right to your own values, beliefs, opinions, and emotions -- and the right to respect yourself for them, no matter the opinion of others.
·         The right not to justify or explain your actions or feelings to others.
·         The right to tell others how you wish to be treated.
·         The right to express yourself and to say "No," "I don't know," "I don't understand," or even "I don't care." You have the right to take the time you need to formulate your ideas before expressing them.
·         The right to ask for information or help -- without having negative feelings about your needs.
·         The right to change your mind, to make mistakes, and to sometimes act illogically -- with full understanding and acceptance of the consequences.
·         The right to like yourself even though you're not perfect, and to sometimes do less than you are capable of doing.
·         The right to have positive, satisfying relationships within which you feel comfortable and free to express yourself honestly -- and the right to change or end relationships if they don't meet your needs.
·         The right to change, enhance, or develop your life in any way you determine.

When you don't believe you have these rights -- you may react very passively to circumstances and events in your life. When you allow the needs, opinions, and judgments of others to become more important than your own, you are likely to feel hurt, anxious, and even angry. This kind of passive or nonassertive behavior is often indirect, emotionally dishonest and self-denying.

Many people feel that attending to their legitimate needs and asserting their rights translates to being selfish. Selfishness means being concerned about only your rights, with little or no regard for others. Implicit in your rights is the fact that you are concerned about the legitimate rights of others as well.
Selfishness and Aggressiveness

When you behave selfishly, or in a way that violates the rights of others, you are, in fact, acting in a destructive, aggressive manner --rather than in a constructive, assertive manner. There is a very fine line that divides the two manners of action.

Aggressiveness means that you express your rights but at the expense, degradation, or humiliation of another. It involves being so emotionally or physically forceful that the rights of others are not allowed to surface. Aggressiveness usually results in others becoming angry or vengeful, and as such, it can work against your intentions and cause people to lose respect for you. You may feel self-righteous or superior at a particular time -- but after thinking things through, you may feel guilty later. “

How a very fine gentleman will assert himself?

The legendary Mr. JRD Tata was born in Paris in 1904. His father was Parsi and mother was French. His school days upto the age of 12 were spent in Paris, three years  in Mumbai and Yokohama and one and half year in France. Ultimately, at the age of 22 he arrived in India and lived here for the rest of his life.

JRD Tata‘s sixty odd years of letter writing produced more than 40,000 letters. The selected letters have been published as book “JRD TATA Letters” by Rupa & Co. and  very ably edited by Mr. Arvind Mambro who mentions that “JRD Tata was a prolific letter-writer and … (his letters) reveal various facets of his personality, his relationship with various people, his view on various issues, his kindness, forthrightness, and sense of humour…”

Here, for the sake of understanding how to be assertive without being offensive or aggressive, two of his letters serve as best example I could lay my hands upon. A careful reading will exhibit how JRD’s qualities as a superior human being an his fine sensitiveness about feelings of others as well as his likes and dislikes.

First letter is written to one of his employees, Mr. LP Vachek, General Manager of Taj Hotel  about some thing that would hurt the feelings of others

The second  one ( below) is   written to his neighbour Dr KT Gajjar, a noted pathologist and whose house was next to JRD’s shack at Juhu is explicit about how he would like to be treated

But......Never Try Assertiveness At Home !
A mild-mannered man was tired of being bossed around by his wife so he went to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist said he needed to build his self-esteem, and so gave him a book on assertiveness, which he read on the way home.

He had finished the book by the time he reached his house. The man stormed into the house and walked up to his wife.

Pointing a finger in her face, he said, "From now on, I want you to know that I am the man of this house, and my word is law! I want you to prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm finished eating my meal, I expect a sumptuous dessert afterward. Then, after dinner, you're going to draw me my bath so I can relax. And when I'm finished with my bath, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?"

"The funeral contractor," said his wife.

Global Handwashing Day & World Mosquito Day & what not !!

As any young child grows up, she becomes more and clearer that not only the seven  days of the week have names like Monday, Tuesday  but there are many more. To begin with, her own birthday is most special and then there are many family festival days. By the time she starts attending school, she learns that Sundays are more special; Saturdays equally welcome, although only in half measure.
Soon she learns, as a victim of some prankster that there is All Fool’s Day on 1st April. And  her learning continues as she comes across Children’s Day, Independence Day, Republic Day, Teachers’ Day, Martyrs Day, Army Flag Day. Yet the list would hardly stretch  beyond this point at this point of her innocent life.
One wishes the sweet  little girl’s life were kept this simple and not complicated beyond!  But if she created this lovely “My Special Days Calendar” , taking innovative & creative tips from  Trina’s highly creative blog , the book would have enough space for her entries and would not  be overflowing!  ( Visit http://trinamagnolialove.blogspot.com/2009/07/special-days-calendar.html)
As she grows up as teen, Valentine’s  Day &  Friendship Day bring a new charm in her life alongwith saying hello on Mother’s Day and Father’s Day , which in the eyes of the elders in the are ‘external  influences’ in their traditional values.
Then, with the torturing & insane  recurrence every day, the Sun rises with the GoK (God-only-knows)  type of  some new, never-heard-before types of  special days. Some,  of course,  are solemn ( and hence bearable ) days like Global Hand washing Day (to save children dying from waterborne diseases, because  as many as 5,000 die daily).
But these are outstripped by not-so-solemn newer, funnier, funkier, quirkier and often dumber names for the ‘special’ days in her life which she has to encounter. For a while, the list of these special days brings a chuckle on her face and then, but  she is soon dazzled and  it more often brings a feeling of awe and amazement rather than of admiration !
She would  hardly have energy to explain her plight of reeling under  the bombardment  of  No Smoking Day, World Laughter Day,  Hugging Day,  Left Handers’ Day, World Mosquito Day, World Hello Day, Boss’s Day, Secretary’s Day, National Ice Cream Day , Pop Corn Day,  World Thrift Day, Buy Nothing Day, International Goat Day,  Mule Day, Cranky Co-workers’ Day, National Knock Knock Day, etc , etc,
As though this is not enough, people are creating new ones. Take , for example,   Tom Roy, a US actor, who has created and trademarked as many as 72 new days for the sheer fun of it and  many of them have been taken by people ‘seriously’. Roy started inventing them in 1980s and   "Wellcat Holidays" is a trademark of Thomas and Ruth Roy, which owns the rights to these special days ( more about it on at www.wellcat.com )
He is not alone  ! Roy's holidays compete with more than 12,000 other holidays  for recognition, Most are generated by special-interest groups, trade associations, lobbyists, self-promotional authors or celebrities.  All these appear in Chase's Calendar of Events which is regarded  as the USA’s  annual bible of extraordinary occasions and special days and events ( and is a part of renowned  McGraw-Hill Companies).  But Roy's are funnier than most, They are regarded as America’s biggest holiday makers.
To our sweet teenager’s amazement and bewilderment, Roy’s list includes  Panic Day, No Socks Day, No Underwear Day, No Housework Day,  Have Bad Bad Day, Repot Your Plant Day, Donut Day, Loosen Up & Lighten Up day, Laugh & Grow Rich Day, Eat What You Want Day, Talk Like a Pirate day, Cook Something Bold & Pungent Day, Make Up Your Mind Day, Blah Blah Day, Be Late Day,  Stay Home Because You Are Well Day & to top  this all, there is Make Up Your Own Holiday ( March, 26),
The little, sweet girl finds, to her further despair that some are working hard in creating  special months, especially in USA and she is worried ! Because the rest of the world is too quick to import such a stuff home.  The list is sometimes serious, well-intentioned, light-hearted and appears sometimes out-of-this-world and funny too, It makes an interesting reading if you are little worried about the little girl's  future !

Change Your Stars Month,  Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month,  Wealth Mentality Month,  Bird Feeding Months, Boost Self-Esteem Month, Library Lovers' Month, Mend a Broken Heart Month, Pet Dental Health Month, Plant the Seeds of Greatness Month, Return Shopping Carts to the Supermarket Month, Ethics Awareness Month, Expect Success Month, Ideas Month, Listening Awareness Month, Poison Prevention Awareness Month, Umbrella Month,  Card and Letter Writing Month, Emotional Overeating Awareness Month, Fresh Florida Tomato Month, Month of the Military Child, Gifts From the Garden Month, Meditation Month, Military Appreciation Month, Personal History Month, Smile Month, Teen Self-Esteem Month, Prepare Tomorrow's Parents Month, Dairy Alternatives Month, Potty Training Awareness Month, Bereaved Parents Awareness Month, Cell Phone Courtesy Month, Share a Sunset with Your Lover Month, Wheelchair Beautification Month, Women's Motorcycle Month, Get Ready for Kindergarten Month, Happiness Happens Month, Win with Civility Month, Children's Good Manners Month, College Savings Month, Shameless Promotion Month, Church Safety and Security Month, Eat Better, Eat Together Month, Squirrel Awareness Month, Workplace Politics Awareness Month, Family Stories Month, Gluten-Free Diet Awareness Month, Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, Rising Star Month, etc , etc,
Creating a new, special day or month would be totally  absurd if there is no  detailed activity list  for celebrating it. One  wonders how would  people participate in the celebrations, remember the event and carry home the message or  spirit or fun!
Fed up by the sometimes sensible and often senseless list of days and months which clutters her calendar, she takes a hint from Roy’s Make Your Own Holiday, which falls on March 26.  Unable to wait so long, she takes a serious, concerned look around her life in her own country and starts jotting down her wish list of new special days.
Her moving finger writes, as though with a fervent hope for a better future ( and also with a little but sweet sense of innocent reciprocation ):
No corruption day  celebration by all corrupt  as well as corrupting  people; No walk out Day in Parliament and state assemblies, etc., No work delaying tactic Day,  No food adulteration Day, No spitting on the walls Day, No urinating on the road Day, No ticketless travel Day, No black money transaction Day, No child spanking Day, No needless operations and pathological investigation Day, No cheating the consumer Day, No flirting-in-office  Day, No simple people exploitation Day, No electricity outage Day, No public transport delay Day, No soiled currency note Day, No jumping the queue Day, No quack medicine Day, No tall claims advertisement Day, No traffic discourtesy Day, No senseless-email / SMS forwarding Day, No poor jokes Day, No “missed” cell phone  calls  Day, No sandalwood cremation day for VIPs, No noisy siren-fitted VIP cars day, and No  intolerance Day etc, etc,
Amen !
